It is told in an intimate but not sentimental way, and is really quite touching. It doesn't pull it's punches so be prepared for a tough watch at times.

All in all I thought it was a great read, I've never finished a BL novel in an afternoon, and it is easily now my favorite DA novel. The Lion and 1st Legion are really well handled, and I think Guymer absolutely nailed it. Feel free to ask any questions and I will reply as best I can! The novel opens up discussing how the Lion has never seen the Emperor's face. It mentions how it can be difficult to describe the Emperor and each Primarch has his own version. The Lion sees a "a hooded figure, armoured in Emerald plate... wreathed in obscuring light. " This is said to be the Emperor's truest visage among the Primarchs. The enemy is the Khrave from the earlier Black Books. The DA were involved with the clean up (aka extermination) of the survivors from Indra Sul. They are said to be older than galaxies, and at times it felt like Guymer wanted to use the Necrons but they fit. The Khrave can do a lot of spooky psyker stuff. The Lion, and the DA as a whole, are stressed to be uninterested in glories and honors like the other Legions. That's why he doesn't go to Ullanor and trust more than the Emperor. The DA are all about duty and getting shit done. In fact, the DA are described as the Emperor's Exterminators. Russ and the Wolves are said to be the "threat, " and meant to mostly be a deterrent. The DA are what will burn the galaxy and leave nothing but dust and ash so the Emperor can build anew. Word for word they are The Final Solution. I am not kidding this was in a BL novel. The novel follows several DA with most of the emphasis being a Librarian of the Firewing who is in the Cenobium of the Order of the Santales. This group was founded to prepare for the Khrave to ever show up again. There is a lot more introspection into the organization of the DA, as a plot twist in the novel has the Grand Master of the Santales being just an ordinary tactical Marine. Redloss, Holguin, Griffayn are all present. Alajos and Nemiel appear at the very end and Corswain isn’t mentioned at all. The Marines exiled to Caliban don’t get mentioned at all either. The DA don't have many Mechanicum adepts attached to them, as they rely a lot of Fore-Wrights from Terra. Senior Ironwing guys also can act basically as Techmarine. Part of this is because some of the Archaeotech the DA have would probably cause Mars to break off from the Imperium. Speaking of Archaeotech, this book has it in droves. Psy weapons, Beam weapons fitted onto Stormbirds, a weapon called a lucidiron arc rifle that literally kills things by scaring them to death The Dreadwing Chambers are filled with stuff that even Redloss doesn't know. At one point they pass a casket that only the Ironbringer and Dreadringer may open when together, and it emits a psychic scream that frightens the POV character. Redloss also warns him not to touch anything. The DA also have several shackled Men of Iron they keep around called the Excindio artificia. They use them against the Khrave as they Khrave can only see entities with psychic imprints and these don't. They have to be accompanied by someone basically carrying a kill switch to keep them from turning on the DA The Khrave excel by feeding off of insecurities and secret hatreds. They can't really take control of the DA because of this. Even when they are able to get into the minds of a Dark Angel, they can't tell who anyone is or understand the command structure so the information is worthless. At one point, a Khrave attempts to Mind Rape the Lion. It backfires terribly for said Khrave and the Lion instead steal information from its mind. The novel has the Lion regularly playing 4d chess. He basically sets bait to draw the Khrave out so he can destroy them and learn where they are. This also gives him clues to where all of their thralls are which leads to an Imperium wide purge. The Firewing apparently does a lot with intelligence and counter insurgency. They already have Interrogator Chaplains at this point The Deathwing wear both Cataphractii and Tartaros armors. The Lions bodyguards are called companions in this, and they are said to wear bone-white armor now to represent the Death Blows they would take for him. Holguin is described as having white edging on his armor but otherwise black and gold. So RIP the old fluff on white Deathwing armor. The Lion's pistol is called the Fusil Actinaeus and it appears to be a special twin-barreled plasma gun. The ending has the Deathwing and the Lion boarding a Khrave ship and it has really cool Space Hulk vibes with the Khrave bursting out of walls The DA deploy 20 Leviathan Dreadnaughts into the final battle, this is said to be an extremely rare thing that only a few Legions could actually pull off The Lion is said to genuinely love his sons, but he also maintains high expectations of them and he understands that he sometimes must order them to their deaths. He has a great moment with the Duriel, the head of the Ironwing, where he tells him he has utter trust for all command decisions Speaking of Duriel, he has a nice moment reflecting on a seagulls nest. He chose to leave that one spot of rock unmolested while building defenses as for once in his life he wanted to leave a "blameless" animal alone. The Lion has an interesting connection to nature and animals that pops up a few times. A few times it describes his taking in his natural surroundings like an actual animal. The DA went super Arthurian in this novel. Between the Lion's connection to nature, a DA librarian who keeps pine cones and leaves from Caliban, and the new DA character names: Aravain, Kaye, Trigaine.

'Ordinary Love (2019) is exactly what it says on the tin: a portrait of mundane, turbulent, beautiful love. It charts the journey of a couple moving through tough times and is as thoughtful and nuanced as you'd hope. Its story is rather straightforward (it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect) but it delivers what it needs to and feels all the more 'real' because of it. The focus of the film is something that isn't actually explored all that often and it's great to see it portrayed so sensitively here. The picture's grounded, non- romanticised' romance is brilliant, too. It feels as close to 'real' as possible, an honest and moving exploration of love that never seems heightened or false. The two stars deliver the goods in their subtle, harder-than-you-may-expect roles, coming together as a compelling pair of, essentially, real people. They have flaws and they argue but they also have an undeniable connection. When this is exploited, it's really heart-warming. When it comes down to it, though, the flick just isn't all that exciting or, perhaps, impactful. It's engaging enough and never even close to boring, but it doesn't quite hit home as hard as it ought to. It's good, don't get me wrong. I can't quite put into words what it is that it is, for me, missing. I guess I'll say it like this: it's good, but it's not great. 6/10.
